So....EVERYONE asks us why did you pick NH?
We had been living in Belgium for nine years and it was time to move back to the US. So, where does a person start? Well, I started with the Internet. We knew Mark would still be traveling back to Europe for work, so our first pick was the East coast. Then we looked at what states would not tax Mark's military retirement pay. That really narrowed it down. Then we looked at which states did not have income taxes and again that narrowed it down a bit more. Amanda was in school at UMASS in Amherst at the time of the move, so when we saw that NH fit a lot of our qualifications and we would be near her, that is where we decided to look.
I then began the search on line and then made a trip to NH to look at homes. At the time, 2006, there were not a lot of homes on the market and I found nothing. Then right before I went home I found THE place, but after the negotiations I left without the house. Fortunately on my way home there was a storm and I got stranded in the D.C. airport. They could not get me out for 3 days, so I flew back to Amanda's in MA. Luckily the owners came back with another offer and I snapped it up. The home was ours. :)
We live on almost 12 acres surrounded by woods. The living room of our house was built in 1804 and was a one room school house. The rest of the home was built in 1970 and 1980. We have now been here for almost 3 years and we absolutely LOVE it. We did not know that this is what we were looking for until we found it and for us it is heaven on earth.
Bet you were wishing you did not ask...Why NH?
